Being Black*

  • artist Linda Koen

From the perspective of the  body,

Being ‘black” is a

strange thing most days

especially when I am  in nature

where  variety is important,

giving the ecosystem its balance,

depth,

richness,

health,

every component affects its overall expression

everything is of value

picture  the inner landscape of systems

where

all we say and do either sustains or degrades us

how does color of skin  have permission

to define the entirety of our lives ?

it is  a regulator temperature

an ever present guardian

from the elements.

why

did i

agree

to such foolishness

as to minimize

the value of my skin

to  its color ?

to form a life

around it?
